Michigan governor announces tuition-free educational program for essential workers

Michigan governor announces tuition-free
educational program for essential workers

Essential workers in Michigan that are helping on the front lines during the coronavirus pandemic may be given the opportunity to continue their educational pursuits for free, the state's governor said Wednesday.

The program, titled "Futures for Frontliners, will be available to essential workers without a college degree, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said.
The program will be offered not only to those working in hospitals or nursing homes, but also to grocery store employees, child care workers, sanitation workers and those who deliver supplies.
"The Futures for Frontliners program is our way of saying 'thank you' to those who have risked their lives on the front lines of this crisis," Whitmer said in a statement. "I want to assure all of our workers we will never forget those of you who stepped up and sacrificed their own health during this crisis. You're the reason we're going to get through this."
Whitmer described the program as "paths to opportunity" for Michigan's essential workers, and likened it to the GI Bill offered to returning soldiers after World War II.
"Historically when Americans put their lives on the line to defend the rest of us from a foreign enemy, we have shown our gratitude by giving them educational opportunities to improve their lives," Whitmer said during a press conference on Wednesday. "Our enemy in this instance, is a virus, but our frontline workers are just as heroic, and that's why it's important for us to extend some gratitude, and some opportunity, once we are beyond this moment."
The program will ensure "a tuition-free pathway to college" as well as an opportunity to earn a technical certificate, associate degree or potentially a bachelor's degree at universities.
Whitmer said that she looks forward to working on enacting her proposal with the bipartisan legislative coalition that helped pass Reconnect, another educational program for adults, last month.
"I'm hopeful that other governors across the country will follow our lead to create pathways opportunity for the people who've been on the frontlines protecting our families," she said.

Do Joe Biden’s supporters still ‘believe all women’?

Do Joe Biden’s supporters still ‘believe all women’?

Here is an obvious attraction in certain simple claims. ‘Believe all women’, for instance, is easy to utter, beneficial to the speaker and guaranteed to get applause from any live audience, terrified as they are into not clapping vigorously enough. It is also a deeply unwise piece of advice. As unwise as it would be to say ‘believe all men’ or ‘believe all humans.’ It suggests that the word of a woman is inevitably worth more than a man. Or that women do not lie, and could never be expected to. Or that while some women may lie it is worth accepting the consequences of this as collateral in order to make up for lost time.

Of course the downside of simplistic claims comes when the little lie you always suspected was embedded in the claim (but which you allowed to pass for convenience’s sake) comes up and bites you. During the Brett Kavanaugh hearings two years ago it was very easy for opponents of the Trump administration to say ‘believe all women’. Because they didn’t want president Trump’s nominee to be on the Supreme Court. And so they decided to always believe the accuser and believe the worst of the accused. What are these same people to do now that a woman – former Senate aide Tara Reade – has come out accusing the Democratic nominee for president, Joe Biden, of sexual assault?

The case of Michelle Goldberg at the New York Times is somewhat typical. When Brett Kavanaugh’s accusers were going full pelt Ms Goldberg found her happy gear. She described the accuser as ‘credible’ (‘Boys will be Supreme Court Justices’), summoned up the vision of the ‘Handmaid's Tale’ (inevitably) and concluded that Kavanaugh and the entire ‘ruling class’ in America were ‘Pigs all the way down.’

And how did the same Michelle Goldberg at the New York Times react to this latest claim? ‘What to do with Tara Reade’s allegation against Joe Biden?’ she bravely wondered aloud, before answering her own question by claiming that the allegation was being used ‘to troll the #MeToo movement’.

Of course anyone can do that cop-out. The claims against Brett Kavanaugh might have been said to have been used to troll the Republican nominee for the Supreme Court. Or Republicans in general. Or those of us who feel Margaret Atwood is a tad over-cited by the American left.

Goldberg has since responded to the mounting evidence in the Biden case, but the way she has responded is again characteristic. ‘What a nightmare’ she said on Twitter about the ‘most persuasive corroborating evidence that has come out so far.’

Why a nightmare? Why not further evidence that we should always ‘Believe all women?’ Or somesuch. Likewise Stacey Abrams, one of the women auditioning to be Joe Biden’s vice-presidential running-mate. When asked who she believed in this case, Ms Abrams was clear: ‘I believe Joe Biden’ she said on CNN the other night. What a coincidence.

There is a lesson in here, if only we could find it. I would expect both political sides to take the lesson that they must double-down on any and all allegations against their opponents and defend their own even more fervently when this sort of things occurs. But the lesson that should be taken away is that one of the little lies of recent years is not fit for purpose. That truth and truthfulness, believability and dishonesty do not run along chromosomal lines, any more than they run along party ones.

California Governor Will Order All Beaches Closed to Stop Coronavirus

California Governor Will Order All Beaches Closed to Stop Coronavirus

Gov. Gavin Newsom will order all beaches and state parks closed starting Friday after people thronged the seashore during a sweltering weekend despite his social distancing order that aims to slow the spread of the coronavirus, according to a memo sent to police chiefs around the state.

Eric Nuñez, president of the California Police Chiefs Association, said it was sent to the group’s members Wednesday evening so they have time to plan ahead of Newsom’s expected announcement Thursday.

A message to the governor’s office seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned.

While most state parks and many local beaches, trails and parks have been closed for weeks, Newsom’s order is sure to ignite pushback from communities who argue that they can safely provide some relief to residents who are starved of fresh air.

Pressure is building to to ease state and local restrictions that have throttled the economy, closing most businesses and adding nearly 4 million people to the unemployment rolls.

On Wednesday, six San Francisco Bay Area counties that imposed the first broad stay-at-home orders in California because of the coronavirus loosened them slightly to allow for landscaping, construction and other outdoor businesses, such as flea markets and nurseries, so long as social distancing is maintained.

And in what could be a critical addition for many parents, it specifies that summer camps are allowed, but only if kids stay in small groups and their parents are considered to hold essential jobs under the state order, such as health care workers.

Some recreational bans also were eased, but not all in exactly the same way. For instance, tennis will be OK in Sacramento starting Friday, but not in San Francisco.

Compounding the confusion: Some elements of the revised orders won’t take effect because they conflict with the statewide stay-at-home order, which is still in place.

In Riverside County, authorities said its local order will end Thursday and be replaced by less-restrictive measures. Trails and parks will be open for hiking, biking and horseback riding as long as visitors wear masks.

Health officials, however, warn that more mingling also brings the potential for more infection and the government should tread gingerly when easing restrictions so as not to ignite another surge in coronavirus cases.

Tennessee Man In Gorilla Suit Arrested After Running Into Wrong House And Scaring Child

Tennessee Man In Gorilla Suit Arrested After
Running Into Wrong House And Scaring Child

There is a bizarre case out of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee where Richard Muzick, 31, reportedly went into the wrong home to play a prank.  Instead, he scared a six-year-old child. It likely had to do with the fact that Muzick was wearing a gorilla costume at the time. What is curious is that he is now charged with aggravated burglary despite the police concluding he was mistaken about the house.
Police responded to a call and learned that, after being confronted, Muzick took off running in his gorilla suit.

What I found interesting was the charge. The police concluded that he was confused by the home and did not just randomly select a home to terrorize a child as a faux gorilla.

In Tennessee, there is a step up to aggravated battery when a defendant unlawfully enters or remains in a habitation (any structure designed or adapted for overnight dwelling) with the intent to commit a felony, theft, or assault therein. (Tenn. Code Ann. § 39-14-403.)  I do not see the intent to commit a felony if this was a mistake and he took no other action or took no property.

4 Children dead, 1 missing after horse-drawn buggy overturns in Kentucky storm

Four children were killed and a fifth was missing after a horse-drawn buggy overturned in Kentucky during a rainstorm Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The search was ongoing in Bath County in the northeastern part of the state, where the horse and buggy were navigating a low-water bridge when it overturned the children and an adult into the water, Kentucky State Trooper Scott Ferrell said.

The adult was quickly rescued, he said. Four of the children had been found dead, and officials are searching for the fifth child, Ferrell said.

"Tragically, we have also had five Amish children swept away by floodwaters this evening after the heavy rain we’ve experienced today," Bath County Judge-Executive Bobby C. Rogers said on Facebook Wednesday. "I ask that you please remember these individuals, and their families in your prayers this evening, and the days ahead."

Mexican cartels turn to human trafficking (UIF)

Mexican cartels turn to human trafficking (UIF)

MEXICO CITY, April 29 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – O rganized crime is mutating in Mexico as gangs who steal oil and sell drugs try a lucrative new line of work trafficking people, according to a top official fighting money laundering.

Santiago Nieto, head of Mexico’s financial intelligence unit (UIF), said his team had discovered that some of the country’s most notorious cartels had branched out into sex trafficking, especially ones whose core business faced disruption.

“A lot of criminal groups are mutating,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation at the unmarked office building that houses the UIF, responsible for unearthing illicit funds.

“When one possibility ends … they start to link up with other kinds of criminal activities,” Nieto said in an interview conducted at distance in his office.

Mexico is an origin, transit and destination country for human trafficking, a global business estimated to be worth $150 billion a year.

Yet relative to the drugs trade, little is known about the shadowy groups in Mexico that deal in people.

High-profile cases often involve smaller, family-based U.S.-Mexico networks rather than the big cartels that grab headlines.

The Guanajuato-based Santa Rosa de Lima gang dedicated to tapping oil pipelines later turned to extortion and got involved in a table dancing bar staffed by trafficked women, Nieto said.

He said the Mexico City Tepito Union drug gang had similarly branched out to guard women forced into commercial sex.

Nieto traced the web of criminal activities across a meter-wide sheet of paper with a complex diagram linking bank transfers, trips and shell companies that supported the rackets.

Human trafficking may be the third-largest illicit activity in Mexico, after drugs and guns, he estimated.

To help combat what is a fast-growing crime, Nieto said U.S., Canadian and Mexican financial intelligence teams had planned joint meetings, but the pandemic had put that on hold.

Sinkholes form through both natural and human-made processes.

We didn’t know that sinkholes can form through both natural and human-made processes.

Most of us think about erosion on the surface of the earth, but erosion can occur in the subsurface as well. In fact, scientist and engineers have a very creative name for just such a process: internal erosion. If just the right factors come together in the subsurface, some very interesting things can occur, including sinkholes.

Mayor de Blasio: Breaks up massive crowd gathered for rabbi's funeral in Brooklyn

ill not allow this, "Major Bill de Blasio said." I have instructed the NYPD to have one standard for this whole city: zero tolerance. "

New York Major Bill de Blasio sent police to Brooklyn on Tuesday to disperse a massive crowd that had gathered for a rabbi's funeral in defiance of a statewide shutdown over the coronavirus.

The major sent a series of tweets scolding the crowd, messages that they generated widespread backlash from many who felt they unfairly singled out the city's Jewish community.

There were no summons or arrests of those mourning Rabbi Chaim Mertz, according to a police spokesman.

Photos and videos showed streets packed with mourners, which the major said was "absolutely unacceptable."

"What I saw WILL NOT be tolerated so long as we are fighting the Coronavirus," he said, noting that he went himself to ensure that the mass dispersed.

"My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed. I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups. This is about stopping this disease and saving lives. Period. "

De Blasio said he understood the instincts to mourn after months of remaining indoors.

New Zealanders are so eager to eat burgers after the coronavirus lockdown that the police are having to enforce crowd control

New Zealanders are so eager to eat burgers after the coronavirus
lockdown that the police are having to enforce crowd control

Wellington, New Zealand (CNN) Police in New Zealand have been required to enforce crowd control measures at a popular fast food outlet after large numbers of people rushed to buy burgers following a relaxing of the country's lockdown measures on Tuesday.

New Zealand, which has reported 1,474 confirmed and probable coronavirus cases and 19 deaths, spent almost five weeks under a strict, level four lockdown. The country eased into level three restrictions on Tuesday, meaning some children could go back to school and 400,000 people were able to go back to work.
But for many, it was a chance to finally eat the fast food they had been craving. Under level three restrictions, a limited number of restaurants and cafes have been permitted to reopen. According to TVNZ, that resulted in long queues of cars at KFC and McDonald's drive-thrus outlets throughout Auckland, the country's biggest city.
And at a burger joint in Auckland, the crowds were so large that the police were called.
"We were called a small number of incidents last night where people weren't adhering to social distancing," a police spokesperson said, adding that one was in Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore. "There was a large group congregating, police attended and education was given to ensure a better and safer process."
A spokesperson for BurgerFuel confirmed on Wednesday that the police were called to the fast food chain's Glenfield outlet, and added that the police had been very helpful with controlling the large crowd.
"Day one of re-opening saw our BurgerFuel stores inundated with a stamp of customers, way beyond what we had anticipated," the spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday.
BurgerFuel will now only take orders online, and all outlets will have a crowd controller at the store, the spokesperson said.

The police spokesperson said they received another call where a person was concerned that the road was blocked with traffic to get into a drive-thru. "Our call taker had to inform them that, that was in fact the queue," the spokesperson said.

On Wednesday, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that officials had been in contact with the head office of BurgerFuel to ensure they understood their obligations.

"They certainly didn't fulfill those obligations last night," she said.

China calls Australia 'gum stuck to sole of its shoe'

China calls Australia 'gum stuck to sole of its shoe'

Angry at Australia's efforts to investigate coronavirus, China calls it gum to be scraped off the sole of its shoe

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - After threats of a boycott by Chinese consumers failed to have the desired effect, Chinese state-run media on Monday (April 27) bitterly described Australia as "gum stuck to the bottom of China's shoe."

Last week, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for an investigation into the World Health Organization's (WHO's) botched handling of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), which would include the appointment of investigators who would be handed the same powers as "weapons inspectors , "reported SBS News. Because the investigators would have the power to enter the country without invitation, they could potentially expose coverups and missteps by Chinese officials, unnerving Beijing.

In a Sunday (April 26) interview published by The Australian Financial Review, Ambassador Cheng Jingye was cited as saying that Chinese were "frustrated, dismayed and disappointed with" Australia's proposed inquest. He then warned that Chinese tourists "might have second thoughts" and that people might ask themselves "Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?"

Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham on Monday rebuffed the threats of boycotts by saying "Australia is no more going to change our policy position on a major public health issue because of economic coercion or threats of coercion than we would change our policy positions in matters of national security, "reported Newsweek. He added that Australians expect that a disease that has killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world "warrants transparency and investigation to prevent it from happening again."

That same day, the editor of Chinese State-run mouthpiece the Global Times, Hu Xijin, complained on Weibo about Australia's teaming up with the U.S. to demand an investigation into the start of the outbreak in China. He hinted that China would consider cutting back on business dealings with Australia and pulling out its legions of students from the country.

He then wrote that Australia has become a meddlesome thorn in China's side by "stirring the pot." He then compared Australia to an annoying piece of gum under China's heel: "It's kind of like chewing gum stuck to the sole of China's shoes, sometimes you have to find a rock to scrape it off."

Coronavirus death toll in US now exceeds that of Vietnam War - YoutubeViral

The coronavirus death toll in the U.S. officially
exceeds the number of fatalities during the Vietnam War.

Johns Hopkins University’s death toll in the country reached 58,351 as of Tuesday night, surpassing the 58,220 who died during the Vietnam War that lasted almost 20 years, according to the National Archives.

But the rate of deaths during the so far three-month-long coronavirus pandemic outpaces the fatality rate during the deadliest year during the war, NPR reported. The current death rate reaches 17.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to in 1968, when 8.5 troops for every 100,000 residents were killed.

The coronavirus has also killed many people per day, with the daily death toll passing 2,000 eight days during April so far. The deadliest day of the Vietnam War occurred on Jan. 31, 1968, the day of the Tet Offensive, when 246 U.S. people were killed.

President Trump has repeatedly compared the pandemic to fighting a war against the “invisible enemy.”

The Vietnam War is known for being the first war televised in U.S. living rooms, and the coronavirus pandemic is also believed to be the first covered during a televised daily news cycle, NPR noted.

About 30 percent of the deaths in the U.S. have occurred in New York, which has been badly struck by the virus, according to data from The New York Times.

The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. surpassed 1 million on Tuesday, as the country has documented about a third of the cases confirmed worldwide. The U.S. death toll comprises more than a quarter of the number of deaths worldwide.

Cat Effected with Coronavirus - YoutubeViral

Pet cat tests positive for coronavirus ...

Cat Effected with Coronavirus - YoutubeViral

Coronavirus is a term used to describe an infection caused by different strains of this virus but different animal species are affected by different types of coronaviruses. Knowing what type of coronavirus a cat can get and what you can do to keep your cat safe is important.

Feline coronavirus is not the same type of coronavirus that causes respiratory issues in humans. These are different strains of the virus and a lot is still unknown about how cats may or may not be affected by the human respiratory coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, formerly called 2019-nCoV that causes COVID-19). Over 3,500 pets, including dogs, cats, and horses from all 50 states in the US and South Korea were tested by IDEXX, a major veterinary laboratory, for COVID-19 and all tests were negative but other tests and studies with limited samples showed that cats may be at risk for contracting COVID-19. Cats may be susceptible to contracting COVID-19 from pet owners but the small number that have tested positive have been asymptomatic or showed mild symptoms. There is also no evidence that cats can spread the disease to people, only to other cats, and it is very rare for a cat to test positive in general. There is still much to be learned about this virus and how it may affect cats and other pets so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does recommend that if you are infected with COVID-19 to avoid or limit contact with your pets until more information is known about this virus.

What Is Coronavirus in Cats?
Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is a viral disease that causes diarrhea in cats but can also lead to a more serious disease called feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Because of the risk for developing FIP, feline coronavirus is a concerning virus.

Signs of Coronavirus in Cats
Diarrhea
Bloated abdomen
Difficulty breathing
Lethargy
Weight loss
Lack of appetite
Yellowing of skin and/or eyes
Increased thirst
Increased urination
Vomiting
Occasionally feline coronavirus can cause severe diarrhea in a cat but it is most often a very mild form if it isn't the strain associated with FIP.

As there are some forms of life in it already, the YouTuber who curates the channel Atomic Shrimp monitors the glass jar as it is rapidly coming alive.

According to its creator, the channel Atomic Shrimp is about ideas. “Ideas that lead to crafts, inventions and recipes, investigations and new skills. It’s also about looking at the world with curiosity and wonder, appreciating the small things, loving the underdog and embracing new things at the same time as cherishing older traditions, or sometimes turning them upside down,” the about section in the YouTube channel reads.

Will Make You Crack Up Every Single Time !! YoutubeViral

You may have spotted animals simply doing their thing and laugh
hysterically at their behavior. Just like these animals stuck in the weirdest
places, they sure aren’t doing it for comedic reasons.
BBC One’s ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ is a sketch comedy show that overdubs
comedic voiceovers over animals going about their daily lives in the forest or
jungle. It’s amazingly brilliant and is guaranteed to make you laugh. The editing
is also superb and for this video, in particular, it was pieced together.

Ali Safa, from Australia, was relaxing in his garden one day.
He fell asleep and woke up a stray cat napping on his stomach!
Ali decided to take a selfie with the kitten, he really didn’t mind whether or not this cat had fleas. When she finally awoke, she let her new friend know that she was ready for breakfast!
Ali didn’t have any cat food in the house so he gave her left over chicken from his previous meal and the skinny feline wolfed it down. He had never had a pet before but he quickly gained this stray kitty’s trust. he named her Angel and a visit to the vet revealed that she was in purr-fect health.

Devoted Bullfrog Dad Saves His Tadpoles
 From Dying || VIRALYOUTUBE

Most recognize the African bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus) as one of Africa's largest known frogs, but there's actually a lot more to this large amphibian than meets the eye.

When it comes time to spawn, African bullfrogs settle in small pools surrounding a primary source of water. The male stays behind to keep watch over his tadpoles, and with the hot Sun beating down on the ground, it quickly becomes evident that the pool won't remain for long.

In order to save his tadpoles, the father must be quick to think on his feet. With the water drying up quickly under the beating Sun, the father decides that the tadpoles' best chance at survival is being transferred to the larger water source: a nearby pond.

In an effort to save his tadpoles, the father climbs out of the pool and begins using his powerful hind legs to dig a channel between the pool and the nearby pond. In time, the channel becomes large enough that water can flow from the pool to the pond, and the tadpoles begin to flow with the water.

After observing his work and recognizing that most of the tadpoles have made it to safety, the father leaps into the pond with his tadpoles. Now that's dedication ...
